Nine-year-old Matt's summer is looking like it's going to be long, boring, and lonesome. His best friend Joel has just moved away, and even worse, Matt's dad is serving in the Middle East and won't be home for months. Thoroughly depressed, the one friend Matt can count on is Finn. Finn, a mixed-breed shelter dog, is always happy to see him and is his loving, playful companion--even if he has bad manners. Luckily for Matt, his summer soon brightens when he makes a new friend. Jamal is the new boy in the neighborhood, and he has a therapy dog named Sunny. With the help of Jamal, Matt begins to train Finn to learn basic commands. Later in the summer, Matt and Jamal are having a campout when something scary happens, and their canine companions are able to keep them safe. On the day of the big test to see if Finn will be a therapy dog, Matt stands up to a bully and Finn shows what he's made of. With Finn finally a therapy dog, Matt and Finn begin their journey to Memory Lane. They meet Sadie, a kind and frail lady who helps Finn overcome his fear, and Gabe, a sick boy in the hospital. Walk the trail with Matt and Finn as they reach out to others and make new friends. Finn's Trail of Friends is an upbeat new story that shows young readers the caring nature of shelter dogs and how most are just waiting on someone to love them. Using a conversational tone and a positive, happy storyline, this wonderful book shows how a shelter dog can become a therapy dog and how therapy dogs can go on to touch lives in a profound way. Filled with exciting adventure as well as a heartfelt message, this fantastic book reaches out to children everywhere. For more information, please visit finnsfriends.webs.com.

Matt is nine years old and very lonely. His best friend has moved away, his father is stationed overseas in the Middle East, and his only companions are his bratty sister Tara and his faithful, but unmannerly dog Finn. When he meets Jamal, a new neighbor his own age, whose dog, Sunny, is a therapy dog at a local hospital, his life changes for the better. Jamal helps him train Finn as a therapy dog, too, and in the process Matt finds friendship, a purpose, and willingness to stand up for his sister. This is a sweet story, which showcases the gentleness, affection, and deep worth in the human-canine bond. There is little in it that will disturb or upset the most sensitive child, and any child who loves dogs will find friends in Finn and Sunny. Matt is a nice kid, though not by any means sappily angelic, and his relationship with his sister is funny in places and touching in others. The author gently shows through the events of the story, without over-explaining or bogging the story down in sentiment and moralization, just how much difference a therapy dog can make in the lives of sick, lonely, and/or elderly people.
There isn't much plot here, though, and very few obstacles to overcome. While Matt is sad, for good reason, at the beginning of the story, things start looking up immediately after he meets Jamal, and the story continues to move towards a happy ending without too much in the way of conflict (except for an entirely predictable, mild dispute with the owner of a purebred dog, who is rather stereotypically snobbish about a "mutt" like Finn). While this might be a good trait in a book aimed at young children (depending, of course, on the child), it also leaves the book without much substance or interest to it.
FINN'S TRAIL OF FRIENDS is a satisfying read for children who love dogs, and prefer a warm and fuzzy story that is stress free.
