Eileen Battersby is the chief literature critic of The Irish Times and is, in the words of John Banville, 'the finest fiction critic we have'.

But her first full-length book is not about international literature or the state of the novel. It is about dogs. Two dogs in particular, with the unlikely names of Bilbo and Frodo. She adopted the first from a horrible dog pound, and the second decided he liked her and moved in to join the family. She was in her very early twenties, an intensely serious student and runner who had just moved to Ireland from California. The dogs became her most loyal companions for over twenty years, witnesses to an often difficult human life and more important to her than most other humans.

This book is about two animals with personalities, emotions and prejudices. It is unlike any other book ever written about dogs. It is not sentimental or twee. Battersby became intimately involved in the lives of these intelligent, shrewd creatures, and brings them to life with rare passion and insight. She writes honestly and movingly about the reasons why, for certain people - especially women - there is more integrity in the mysterious relationship with a mammal who cannot speak than there is in most of the relationships that human society has to offer.

This book, a memoir of the author's twenty years with her dogs Bilbo and Frodo, was recommended in The Guardian's Best of 2011. By keeping the dogs the center of attention in her narrative, her own life's trajectory becomes setting. The reader is aware that Battersby is moving up in the world: her writing assignments become more significant, her houses more comfortable, friends more affluent. However, her boyfriends, alas, remain predictably disappointing. Bilbo and Frodo are the constants - the true love story. At first reading, while being enchanted by her two "guys," still I felt I was reading little more than a collection of antecdotes. It took a little slowing down on my part to appreciate the subtlety of her construction. She shows rather than talks about the unconditional commitment she learns from
Frodo and Bilbo; for her the quality is the same between dogs and their person or between mother and child. Near the end of the book, this is beautifully shown in the pilgrimage of sorts she makes with the guys and her small daughter to ancient Irish monastic sites. This is an easy read, the prose clean, the narrator is adept and likeable. The dogs are terrific and will inspire you to really pay closer attention to the canine in your life!

Ordinary Dogs edition by Eileen Battersby Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

This little book justifies the companionship between dogs and humans. It's an account of someone telling it as it is - what the relationship between humans and dogs means to both sides of that relationship - a personal and impersonal account. It has funny, anxious and poignant moments. I really enjoyed it.
if u are an animal lover u will love this book its fantastic great story I could nt leave it out of my hands
Loved it. Having had several dogs of the mongrel variety in my lifetime, I enjoyed their life story with the author
As an ardent dog lover, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters of the dogs were so well described , their escapades, their ailments all made you feel part of their lives. The authors experience of the Dog Shelter bought back similar memories, and shelters should take note. Some tears where shed, but in the end a feel good book.
I laughed, I cried I fell in love with the dogs. It was a wonderful read and very enjoyable as well.
If you're a dog lover, you will probably adore this book. It starts off amazingly with the most vivid descriptions of landscapes and seasons, and with hauntingly sparse allusions to human relationships behind the dog relationships. Brilliant writing, but for me, there was just too much dog in this book.
